The second largest island in the Azores, Pico is the highest point in Portugal, standing at 2351 meters high. The adventure of reaching the summit of this mountain is not just for the brave, but for all those who allow silence to reach them, in the form of thin air capable of depriving us only of the insignificant things we left behind at the start of the climb.
In winter, its summit is covered in white, but this island’s landscape isn’t just about the mountain, as it now also has its own vineyard landscapes, which have been shaped with great effort over the lava and have therefore been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2004. This island is characterized by black and green terrain, a mixture of colors where we can see windmills scattered around, as if it were a soundtrack capable of lulling us to the wind. The landscape is like a game of chess, where the three fishing villages contrast.
Lajes and São Roque are home to the regional museum dedicated to whaling, while the town of Madalena dedicates its center to wine. Today, the island of Pico, together with Faial, are the best islands for whale watching. In fact, the island has several companies offering dolphin and whale watching trips.
